Chris Weidman will be challending MMA living legend Anderson Silva for the UFC Middleweight title in less than two weeks, on July 6th. A few years ago, Weidman had a stand-out performance at ADCC, the submission grappling world championships. But BJJ black belt Vinny Magalhaes caught him in a “Flying Armbar” and ended his run. Check out Mike Thomas’s fight from last night’s Xtreme Caged Combat MMA event - then read below for the interesting back-story on his opponent.
Mike’s opponent spent about 2 months training at Paramount BJJ around 1.5 yrs ago, and expressed an interest in fighting MMA. He left however, after being told that he could not fight until he improved his ground game.
The moral of the story: Listen to your coaches! If they have proven results, you must trust their judgement and follow their instructions!
A last minute addition to the schedule, the 2012 Grapplers Quest “World Championships” was held Dec. 8 in Asbury Park, NJ. Team Lloyd Irvin PA medal chasers Mike Thomas and Phil Mento made the trip for one last event before 2013.
MMA fighter Mike Thomas finished with Double Gold, winning both matches in Intermediate No Gi by submission (flying armbar, choke from the back). He then won blue belt welterweight, both matches via points.
This would be Phil Mento‘s first event as a blue belt, having recieved the belt just one week prior. He won his first match via brabo choke, and won his final 2-0 for the Gold.
Grapplers Quest provides a great opportunity for these athletes to work on their skill-sets in the lead-up to the 2013 IBJJF Majors- the largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments on the planet and the one we have our sights set on- the Pan and the Mundial (Worlds).

This past Friday night, Team Lloyd Irvin fighter Wilson Reis fought Cody Stevens in the main event at Philadelphia’s Matrix Fights MMA event. He won a lopsided unanimous decision to improve to 14-4 overall.
Wilson was at Paramount BJJ two weeks ago working with the students on some of his favorite techniques, and of course we were all there to support him.
Wilson came out immediately throwing combinations with his hands and even a nice high kick that was partially blocked by his opponent. Overwhelming Stevens with strikes Wilson dropped down and grabbed his legs, lifting him up and slamming him to the canvas.
On the ground Stevens was game but again over-matched, as Reis threw strikes and pressured to pass for the entire round. This sequence repeated itself until the third round when Wilson mounted and began throwing big elbows. Stevens hung out but lost the decision.
