Scott Cook is now a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt.
In addition to becoming just the 4th ever black belt awarded at Paramount BJJ, Scott is the co-owner, along with black belt Cameron Mitchell, of Deep Water BJJ in Harrisburg, PA.
As a competitor Scott is a 2x New York Open Champion, and a Boston Open Champion. As a student he is always eager to learn and to share his knowledge. As an instructor he guides his students along the challenging journey that is Jiu-Jitsu, passing down the same well-rounded skillset that he has honed over the past decade.
He is a hard working man who never looks for excuses. He ferocious and unrelenting with his Jiu-Jitsu. When he won the New York Open in 2014, he submitted all 6 of his opponents and looked unbeatable. Yet he is always humble and always respectful.
Congratulations to Scott. We are honored to have him as a representative of both Paramount and of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community.

Saturday we held our first ever Submission-Only tournament at Paramount. It exceeded all expectation, as the students who competed stepped up to the challenge, overcame their fears and put on some fantastic matches. Spectators were treated to plenty of great moves and several back-and-forth battles.
Here are the results:
Men’s White Belt Absolute (all weight classes combined)
There were 16 competitors in this division. Jacques submitted all 4 of his opponents in a total time of 24 minutes 23 seconds.
Women’s White Belt Absolute
This was the most competitive division, with 2 of the 3 longest matches of the event. Jocelyn vs. Cathryn 1 lasted 27:35, and Jocelyn vs. Carolyn lasted 22:12.
Men’s Blue Belt Absolute
Brett won 4 matches in a total time of 41 minutes 40 seconds. His first match with Zach was the second longest of the day at 23:55.
By the Numbers
Ed Foley won the $100 cash prize for quickest submission, an americana from mount in 31 seconds. It was the very first submission of the day.
The most common submission was the armock.
Jocelyn Palmer had the most mat-time at 1 hour, 3 minutes and 25 seconds.
The longest match of the day was Jocelyn and Cathryn’s first match, which took 27 minutes and 35 seconds.
Cathryn Millares had the most matches, at 6. She won 4 and lost 2. Zach Fahrenholtz had 5 matches, winning 3 and losing 2.
Stay tuned for an announcement on our Spring In-House tournament (regular rules and weight classed for kids, teens and adults), which is scheduled for May.
We are just 1 week away from our first ever Submission-Only in-house competition, the 2017 Grand Prix, and we have 1 huge division plus… a surprise for the other 2. Check out the line-up for the divisions below:
Men’s White Belt Absolute
Women’s White Belt Absolute
Men’s Blue Belt Absolute
Since the women’s white belt and men’s blue belt divisions are smaller than expected, the decision has been made to make both into a double-elimination tournament. That means if a competitor loses, he or she can bounce back and still win the Gold.
An Overview of the Rules
(We will go over them again before the start of the event at 11am)
No time limit
No neck cranks
No heel hooks
No toe holds or kneebars for white belts (OK for blue belts)
Penalties for stalling:
– Ref will warn you once
– Ref will stop and restart the match from the feet
– Ref will stop and restart the match with your opponent in dominant position- either mount or back, their choice.
Competitors: make sure you are in your gi and warmed up, ready to go, by 11am.
Congratulations to the 28 students who passed their stripe test this weekend. See who made the cut below:
To the students who did not test or did not pass: June may seem like it’s a long way away, but we all know how fast the time can pass. Stay consistent with your training and spend time after class reviewing. Take advantage of our students-only online site and watch the videos.

First class is 1 week from tomorrow, Wednesday March 15th at 7:30am. If mornings are doable for you, please come out to support this new class. Attendance will determine whether or not the class sticks around.
